1979 Williams Flash SS

Rebuild

This phase was a little nerve wracking as unlike my other restorations, I’ve never seen the pin work beforehand.

Some of the long-pole activities during this phase:

  • Replacing all of the older electrolytic caps on all of the PCBs, burning new ROMs, and reflowing new solder on all board connectors.

  • Re-pinning all wire harness connectors. Talk about tedious!

  • Re-soldering hundreds of wire harness connection points to the correct parts.

  • Laying out the locations for newer, 1990’s era flipper assemblies (x3) to replace the originals. Actually had to modify the flipper base for the upper flipper but cutting away a small portion of it with a Dremel tool so as to not interfere with a lamp socket. Flipper action is sooooo much nicer with this 90’s style Williams flippers.

  • Replacing the old, unreliable horse-shoe copper contacts for the drop target registrations with new magnetic sensors (and then dialing them in for accuracy). Not only is the scoring 100% accurate now, but the actual performance of the physical dropping action of the targets is, in a word, crisp. Fantastic upgrade.
