1980 Williams Black Knight SS

Rebuild

I was pretty happy with how the cabinet turned out - colors are now really bright and vibrant! The transformer board and tilt board cleaned up nicely and the red I think gives it a nice accent touch matching the red kickstand, grills, and speaker logo.

All boards were re-capped and thankfully no acid damage to repair. I converted the battery to NVRAM while I was in there.

I also added some Comet LED strips to a couple of the “darker” areas under the plastics. May not be to everyone’s taste but it’s easily reversible should the next owner prefer to go back to socketed traditional lighting.

Inspired by the factory METEOR logo on the back of that pin, I created a Black Knight stencil for this restoration. It won’t be seen very much but it makes me happy, lol.

Thankfully the backbox shielding was already in good shape so I was able to re-use it after polishing it up a bit. This saved me a ton of time from fashioning a new set from roofing flash material. I recreated all of the backbox and cabinet tech cards and decals as best as I could.

The coin door took a few evenings work to completely assemble once I got some bits back from powder coating, but I’m very pleased with the end result.
